The art of Engrossing involves the lettering of documents.
In the past, engrossers were called upon to produce such legal documents as land deeds, mortgages, marriage
licenses, baptism certificates, and commissions, as well as birth and death certificates. A large staff of
engrossers was once used on Capitol Hill to letter Congressional Bills prior to submission for passage.
Probably the most visual piece of engrossing that is available for viewing to most tourists and citizens here in the United States is the Declaration of Independence.
