DALE RAY ANDRE (1889-1950)
OCCUPATION: Clerk and manager for the family shoe store.
Went by his middle name of Edward.
He was paralyzed early on in life, though the cause was never sufficiently determined. The family tells the story that he was playing baseball and fell while catching a ball. Paralysis from the waist down followed soon afterward, though apparently the doctors never found anything broken--they claimed that he had ruptured his appendix, and even did surgery on it. Grandpa Andre spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. In later years he would sit by the bay window at the front of house and spend hours watching the outdoors, especially when his grandchildren were playing in the front yard or when they would walk home from school.
