Uncle Leon was a graduate of the University of Virginia, as well as a Marine veteran of World War II who fought in the Pacific theater.
Later he was a coach and driver's ed teacher at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, a captain of the Roanoke City Rescue Squad, a Shriner, a Mason, and he occasionally taught first aid at Virginia Western Community College. It was one of his first aid classes that eventually led my sister Jana to join the Vinton, VA Rescue Squad when she was a teenager.
