Ahem.

MOST INTERESTING OR ODD THINGS I'VE SEEN LATELY:

Fun: Watching a German Baptist in Rocky Mount who, while dressed in very plain and almost austere dark blues and dark hat, was flying an extraordinarily bright neon-multicolored kite! Neat: the Leonids meteor shower at 4:30 in the morning. Disurbing: An almost close-up look at the wreckage of the Pentagon a few weeks after the attacks.

HEROES:

Cincinnatus, Thomas Jefferson, George S. Patton, Cassiodorus, St. Francis of Assisi, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, most public school teachers (though definitely not most public school administrators), and several of the people who appear in Invisible Ink.

ORGANIZATIONS:

The National Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi (Education Honors society), Sigma Tau Delta (English Honors society), the Intellectual Freedom Action Network, the Smithsonian Institution
